WELCOME TO
SUCCESS & HAPPINESS
CONNECT, SUCCEED
AND SERVE

SUCCESS & HAPPINESS
Success and Happiness creates individual and group success, community and connection. Our weekly Conversation and Connection events focus on self improvement, making new friends and helping serve people in our community. They can be added as a half hour or hour program once a week to existing programs.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SUCCESS PLAN

Benjamin Franklin developed a 13 week plan which he said was the secret to his success where he would focus on one virtue a week. He said trying to do all 13 at once would be overwhelming so instead he focused one a week which he found to be much more effective.

CONVERSATION AND CONNECTION EVENTS

Our Conversation and Connection events cover 12 life skills focusing one life skill each week like eating healthy, exercising and thankful living. We also have a week focusing on writing a new life script.

We break into small groups where people share their ideas on the topic of the week and how to use those ideas to make positive changes in their life.

Replacing bad habits with good ones – strengthening your life in different areas and gain confidence.

These small group conversations also help connect people.

MONTHLY EVENTS, ACTIVITY GROUPS & VOLUNTEERING

1. Weekly Events: In addition to our weekly Connection and Conversation events we also encourage people to be active in other groups in our community.

2. Monthly Events:  We also plan monthly events like a dance and game night, Super Bowl party or attending a local event as a group.

3. Local Activities Groups: We have made a list of local groups that you can join from hiking to quilting and other activities.

4. Volunteer Opportunities: We also have a list of local volunteer opportunities from the food bank to the animal shelter and more that you can join to help out in the community.

5. Resource Listings: We also have a list of resources to help people find help like food banks, help finding a job and other assistance programs.

A SOCIAL BRIDGE FOR MAKING FRIENDS

Connection is hard to find in this internet age. Our weekly events are like a social bridge that helps people connect in person.

Instead of trying to jump from one side of a river to the other it is much easier to walk across a bridge.

Conversations in person help people get to know each other and make friends.

INTERNET vs. IN PERSON DATING

Internet dating can be frustrating and it is hard to meet people in person.

People say there is no place or way to meet people to date these days except online.

Meeting people in person at our weekly events lets you get to know someone over time in a casual setting. It is a much better way to start and build a relationship.

You may also meet people who help who know people you could date.

NETWORKING FOR A JOB

If you are looking for a job networking can be more effective than sending out resumes.

If you meet someone at one of our events who works for a company that you’d like to work for they can help you get a job interview and recommend you.

Networking can also help advance your career or find a new career.

10 TIPS FOR CONNECTING

1. How to be a good listener: The 10 second rule works great. Allow 10 seconds after the other person finishes talking before you talk. (Instead of spending your time thinking about what you want to say, concentrate on what they are saying.)

2. Don’t always top their story: Telling a better story than someone just told may make you feel great but you just diminished their story.

3. How to take a compliment: Say “Thank You.” People don’t want to hear why you didn’t deserve the compliment or more details. They just want to be thanked for complimenting you. Keep it short and simple.

4. How to end a conversation: “It was great talking with you.” This is the easiest way to politely end a conversation. This allows you to talk with and meet other people.

5. How to say No: You don’t have to be everybody’s friend, you don’t have to date everyone but you can be polite. “I’m really busy.” is one way to say no.
“Thanks for asking but I’m not interested, but thanks for asking.” is a positive, negative, positive way of saying no.

6. Accept Rejection: If someone says no to you accept it. Rejection is part of interacting with people. Other people have the right to reject you just like you have the right to reject other people.

7. Hold off on deepest secrets: Having people to talk to is wonderful and sometimes people reveal their deepest secrets at the first activity they attend. This is okay but you might want to consider making some close friends and then sharing with them.

8. Build your social skills: We hold monthly events and you can build your social skills over time. If you have been isolated you will find yourself getting stronger as you attend more activities and interact with more people.

9. Smile: Smiling helps you feel better and gets a warmer reception from other people.

10. Forgive yourself: Forgiving yourself and seeing yourself as someone worth loving helps others love you too.

One of the easiest ways to relax that you can do anywhere is deep and relaxed breathing. You can also breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds

STRATEGY # 2 - Meditation, Nature Walks, Exercise
There are different ways to meditate. The most basic is to do nothing but breathe and smile while thinking positive thoughts. There is also guided meditation that you can do or listen to.   You can do a short 1 to 5 minute meditation or a longer one. Going for a walk or exercising can help relax.

STRATEGY # 3 - Music and Forgiveness
Music can help you relax and meditate. There is classical music and music made for relaxing as well as recordings of nature and other relaxing sounds.
